1. Description
The slow media is disappearing as everything becomes faster
and things are disappearing in virtual world without a trace. What about the
memories? What about relationships in virtual world? “I want to collect
the sweet memory and the relationship that gives me comfort and makes me happy.”
Shinyoung imagined the old box in the garage full of letters, postcards, and
photos of memory.
Shinyoung is developing a customizable product-service
system called Funji through which people can share emotions with each other.
Funji devices and the facebook application not only deliver a voice
message from individuals, but also provide a representation of their identity or
the relationship through customized colors and designs. Funji device also
randomly vibrates, yawns, snores or plays unique sounds to give a user a sense
of companionship. It is also small enough to fit into the palm of a hand so that
people can easily hold and touch it and carry it around wherever they
go.
Funji hopes to be a new medium that can capture a certain memory of a
certain relationship in the digital world so that you can keep them forever. You
can also use it as a secret note that you pass in classes or secret code that
you use with your special friends.
Keywords Mass customization, social networking, communication, emotion, affective
interface, modularity
2. Target audience Teens, Young Adults
3. Background The growing tendency to put oneself first leads to unparalleled freedom, but it
can also create an enormous amount of pressure and isolation. Even though
study after study show that people who have good relationships with friends and
family are the happiest, many times people are geographically or emotionally
distant to their loved ones because they are pursing professional goals. In
urban environments, communication devices such as cell phones, PDAs and
Blackberries are ubiquitous and people are almost constantly digitally
connected. However, most devices are designed to share information rather than
create emotional connections aimed at comforting and supporting each other. I
imagine the old box in the garage full of letters, postcards, and photos of
memory. Those slow media is disappearing as everything becomes faster and remain
digital. What about the memories disappearing in the digital world? I wanted to
create a medium that can capture a certain memory of a certain relationship in
the digital world.
4. What is Funji
Funji is a product-service system that includes Funji application in Facebook, a Hardware prototype and website(www.funji2u.com), which is composed of video and photo archive about relationship between people using Funji.
<Usage flow> <Hardware mockup>
<Facebook application>
5. Research
Through observing how users using each tool and asking specific questions to users, answers
to three questions will follow as a result.
- Can mass customization provide "happiness" to consumers?
- Are chosen affective interfaces effective to deliver and trigger emotions?
- What is the role of communities for mass customization?

Bikejus(Eco design) 2007/07/12 12:53
<Notice> AIRED ON CNN HEADLINENEWS from 12th - 14th of July Check this out. (all times are eastern.) Friday 7-7:30a, 12:30-1p ,5-5:30p Sat 1:30-2p Sun 9:30-10a, 2-2:30p 1. Description By hooking up a DC motor to a bicycle, we can generate and harvest human powered energy. Hooking up the DC motor to an invertor allows us to generate an AC current and household appliances. 2. Personal statement I was interested in efficient way of sustain the earth. Trying to eat healthy food only makes me think that restrain ourselves to make the world better can not last long enough. Looking at people's behavior gave me the idea of using energy that is wasted. The idea of riding a bike not only to be healthy and stay fit but also to harness energy for home environment is perfect for me to try implementing. 3. Implementation (Click the image for enlargement) 1) Sensing: Wheel rotation 2) Process: Motor, Inverter 3) Behavior: Turning on electric devices, charging battery, etc. 4. 1. Description Dust is a personalized companion that you can bring wherever you go or even attach to your clothes. It gives you comfort and relaxation when you are depressed or tired. It also has its own personality so that it randomly snores, vibrates and farts. 2. Personal Statement Garment are the closest personal companion. This idea gave me the desire to develop wearable device that can provide fun, comfort and relaxation wherever the owner goes especially when the owner is depressed or bored. 3. User Scenario The users can carry Dust in their bags or pockets or wear it on one's shoulder or chest. When it is peted, it randomly makes noise or vibrates. It whispers "it's ok." when the user pets Dust longer than 5 seconds as an expression of depression or tiredness. 4. Implementation 1) Sensing: QProx 2) Decision: Mircocontroller 3) Behavior: vibrating motor, LEDs, a speaker 5. Co-worker Michael Chladil Spring, 2007 (exhibited in ITP spring show '07)

Look up! (Campaign) 2007/07/06 16:23
1. Description It is to create and environment that will allow the public to pause and notice something they ordinarily would not, due to their busy lives. Five small dolls- called Dust will be hidden somewhere in Tisch building. Their right hands are pointing at the ceiling and they make noises randomly to get attention from the viewer. When people look up where Dust is pointing at, there are words and the composition of words creates a sentence. Viewers can come to the booth with the sentence they come up with for a gift. 2. Personal statement I am interested in creating interaction that people can take a moment and relax in busy lives. A little bit of curiosity and attention is required to find boring life to be exciting. I want people to find their lives more fun through the unusual experience. Hiding a small black doll in public space is to trigger the behavior of looking at the sky for a relaxation. Also hiding them in several places is for people to have a experience of treasure hunt which another interaction that could occur childhood memories to the audience. 3. Test The experiment has been done on the street with dust with speaker inside. The video is here4. Game plan 1) Walk around to find hidden Dusts 2) Look up where Dusts are pointing at 3) Find the words 4) Compose them to make full sentences. 5) Come and fine for a reward!

Alice In Wonderland 2007/07/02 20:29
1. Concept People have a desire to take a look at other people's lives secretly. Alice in wonderland tickles that desire. By attracting the audience with sounds and lights coming out of a peep hole of a small box, it drives people to see through the hole. However, people are being watched too, which they don’t recognize or try to ignore. I want to address that fact by showing the back of themselves when they open the door of the small box.
2. Personal Statement Alice in Wonderland is a therapy to heal myself. My different personas has been hidden in me waiting for a chance to be exposed. Alice- played by me- is living inside of the small box acts as a pilot, a baby, does yoga, reads a book, looks at the audience and teases them. By the proccess of interacting with people in the box, I believe I can be healed, be more comfortable being myself and be free.
3. Background 1) The documentary in MOMA by Nikki, S. Lee (Nikki S. Lee's a.k.a. Nikki S. Lee) in early October inspired me. I felt empathy as a Korean female living in New York City. We both are brought up in rigid culture where certain rules for women is strong but came to the city of "who cares?" spirit is overflowing. so I have been thinking of the way to heal myself as she does in her work and came up with an idea of interacting with audience through various personas. 2) The idea of peeping came from my crush on Kaleidoscope. I was looking through my kaleidoscope one day and came up with the idea of making audience peep me through the hole and revealing that they are watched too when they open the door.
5. User Scenario 1) The audience passes by a small box and hears the sound such as humming, laughing coming out from the box 2) They look through the peep hole at the door and watch me on the screen in that box 3) They ring a bell and hear the sound "come in" 4) They see their back on the screen in the box when they open the door and hear the laugh coming out from the box.
6. Implementation
1) Sensing: distance sensor, doorbell
2) Decision: microcontroller
3) Behavior: sound, video through processing
